The way Macross handles their prototypes is pretty good overall.
Of the prominent prototypes, you got the YF-19 and YF-21, both incredible machines with problems of their own that the production version resolved by either removing certain modules(The brainwave control system of the YF-21) or tuning down their performance so that normal pilots can control them(YF-19).
Later you got the YF-24, a machine that goes on to be the technological stepping stone for future VFs. The YF-24 carried a lot of new technologies and it came with a lot of issues as well, to the point that 2 out of the 3 prototypes built crashed during testing.
Then you got the YF-29, the closest to a one-man-army VF in Macross. It was extremely powerful, and extremely costly to produce as a result. To date it has never gotten a production version because neutering the YF-29 goes against the very purpose of its existence.
