Last (You) from me, but calling a show you are wondering why is popular like that, and assuming that the homo stuff is just a gimmick (and not relevant for the plot), is not a good way to start any question.
And even if you don't give a fuck about the whole deal with the two leads&robot the show is perfectly enjoyable and there are plenty of people both here and elsewhere (speaking japanese and english) who liked the show enough to support it with their wallet.
