So, what's the actual pipeline of 'coral as fuel' -> 'coral as "voices"' -> 'coral as sapient, self aware beings'? Where's the exact cut off point between each? Ayre seems to be shocked at the fuel part revelation, expresses regret when the coral powered machinery gets destroyed ("coral voices lost again"), yet by the endgame she has no qualms with piloting a coral powered craft armed with coral powered weaponry. Then there's the ambient coral in the environment that, in high enough concentration, powers machinery that's not even originally powered by coral (player's AC during the free flying mission, assuming it has non coral generator), whether or not it's just a gameplay gimmick. Is the coral only sapient and self aware when it makes contact with a sapient and self aware being, a human in this instance, and kind of automatically assumes such complexity of thought when faced with and adapting to interact with an artificially 'augmented' organic neural network? Mingling with machinrey seems to produce 'coral voices', yet the player never actually does hear what they say, nor Ayre mentions anything aside from basically noting that they exist and can influence artificial intelligence operating various machinery, as seen with the Worm "answering to a greater imperative", which makes also makes it sound as if the Worm's ai decided by itself to protect the coral convergence instead of just being piloted/reprogrammed by the coral it ran on.
