I think it's just more that peasants simply accepted the world as fiat because they understood that they were too poor and tired to change it. Perhaps this is wisdom of a sort, "earthy" TBD. I think the distinction of the peasant from the modern NPC is that the NPC memes themself into believing they are actively creating modernity when they passively consume its spectacle. You can kind of understand where this thinking comes from since the modern algorithmic production machine is so tuned in and responsive that it can feel like it is immediately responding to your every desire. Is a machine that gives you exactly what you want whether or not you tell it to acting according to your will? I'm sure things will only get worse.
