The perfectly just city is a series of contradictory propositions with no relation to their actual effective functionality, and the ultimate irony is that the ascension of the Philosopher-King corresponds to the rise of demagogues. It is a city in writing that cannot exist even in theory. Plato points to the fact that it is the duty of the wise to enlighten those who are ignorant, and yet holds that, in order to make the masses satisfied, we must lie to them and keep them in the dark about the nature of the city.

How do we deal with this? What does justice look like? Who should rule? Should everyone be given wisdom? What is philosophy? What is the city? These are the questions you have to ask yourself.

Then, when you are done, read Crito. When you figure out how this fits together, you will have unraveled the secret, a secret which is so obvious that this process is an unlearning more than anything. A random guy on an imageboard cannot unteach you anything, you have to be the one who does it. And then, when you do, you will be confronted with the final contradiction you have to solve: how did Socrates justify his actions?

This teaching, which spans not just The Republic and Crito, but in its fullness the entire Platonic canon, is just a single piece of the totality of Plato's teachings.
