There are a bunch of reports about this very topic, MHV made videos about them IIRC. The Germans tank design and prodcution ironically went on a hiatus from 1940 to 1941, where they basically made the Tiger, saw teh KV and T-34 and decided to make a completely new line of tanks, leading to the Panther and King Tiger.
And that whole program was supposed to result in the E-series,, but obviously the war ended and they were left making obsolete Panzer 3 and 4 and StuGs before ever switching production completely. They partly switched to Pantehrs even though that was essentially meant to be the stopgap solution before the E-series, but by then the metals were too shit, and transmission broke all teh time, etc..

OP's picture is the VK 30.02(D), which translates to experimental construction, tracked 30 ton 2nd version by Daimler Benz. It was meant to be in the 30 ton range. Hitler insisted on upping the front armor to 80mm, resulting in a lot more weight. Obviously, all kinds of added bits and bobs also appeared, further increasing the weight, though this is fairly normal and happens to almost all vehicles.
in comparison, the Tiger protoype was the VK 45.01(H), a 45 ton design being far close to what the final tank actually weighed. In this case Hitler didn't mess around with the armor.
