Well you have to keep in mind that back then the Commodore 64 was technically just there to do paperwork with, and the ability to play games on it was sort of a wink wink thing. Back in the 90s when the Commodore 64s were added the USAF still thought video games were for nerds and that what their pilots would be doing to relax on a long flight was kicking back with a Bud Light and watching a game of football. Now that pilots aren't even allowed to bring their own beer, much less have it provided for them in a complementary mini fridge the idea of what a pilot should be doing on long flights has changed. It may seem like cope now, but the cultural shift on the acceptability of video games didn't happen until like the mid 2000s. The hotplate for making fresh popcorn instead of having to bring a bag that was already popped before you got on board was really the main thing that brought pilot comfort into the mainstream back in the 80s. Before that it was just a little box of MREs and the cot that folds out over the toilet and sink. That's really why they added the microwave to the F-35 even though they removed the mini fridge, it's really just there for popcorn.
