Russia is supposed to be the big boss of the slavic peoples, the one who overseers, guards and rules them. To see their underlings break away and have higher life quality is pure krypnotite to the vatniks masters and slaves worldview. That's a big part why they seethe so much about poland and the baltics in particular.

They want to put as much land as possible between moscow and the west, preferably with good natural barriers too. The paranoid mind of russian is always fearful of being attacked so the larger of a buffer zone they have the better. And with Ukraine not even as a neurtral zone but an active opponent, moscow feels very unsecure.

Ukraines gas&oil findings in particular are a major threat to moscows position as Europes gas station. Mind you that relationship is already broken but to keep any hope of re-establishing that in the future, Ukrainian exploitations and market competition must be eliminated. Rare-earth minerals are pretty important too since China has gobbled most of those up, you can use them as good leverage even if you don't mean to do anything with them yourself.
