Yeah but that is not the (sole) reason manufacturers have switched to those offerings.
It is because the overall rifle market, particularly in the U.S., today demands a modularity in some parallel to the semiauto/AR-15 market (also handguns even more recently muh 'optic ready slide'). Hunting rifles aren't typically sold in a scope+rifle package any more, the Sears catalog days are long gone. Also there is a much wider selection of optic manufacturers on today's market than 20 years ago, and the durability, low maintenance of synthetic stocks (attractive for hunters) has much improved from the 1970s/80s.
