Not anymore. Nowadays with CNC machining and economies of scale, milspec AR production is cheap and fast as fuck and also distributed throughout the US, making it less vulnerable to disruption than the centralized production methods that stamped guns and parts (generally) need.
As for polymer receiver/frame guns, polymer AR lowers are already a semi-proven concept and the KP-15 is a somewhat popular lower. It's more likely that these alternative production methods would be adapted production of AR-15-type designs and done parallel to conventional ARs rather than replace them outright.
You could probably design a simpler and cheaper rifle to produce than the AR, but as it stands, in the short term you can only go cheaper while having a semi-viable infantry long arm by making tube SMGs like the STEN.
If shit hit the fan in the US and they were scraping the bottom of the barrel, they could still equip every dude with a PSA or equivalent AR and a Romeo 5 and probably Magpul MBUS as a backup and still have money and production capacity to spare.
