Because Ukraine has received huge amounts of very specific aid which shaped the nature of the conflict immensely.
If Ukraine would be an actual peer and would've had a tank and air force rivaling Russia's at the beginning of the war, the conflict would've been completely different.

Statistics differed depending on the time and front, but small arms contributed up to 25% of the casualties in WWII.
That's not negligible and for all that talk about trench warfare it's probably important to remember that 20-30% of WWI casualties were also caused by small arms fire.
