"In vogue" is right, because it was never not *relevant*. People just like doing the thing of "if there's no apparent need *now*, then there will be no need in the future." Imagine if we'd adopted and fielded the ADATS, had iterative design for it over decades, and wound up with a 30 or 40mm cannon version that fired ~15km range missiles that did away with the anti-tank capability and focused anti-air effectiveness.
