Generally yes. The only drawback is that you might not get spells of your preferred element in the very early game when you're relying on Dream Waker for stock, but that stops being a problem the moment you have the money and means to travel around buying spellbooks.
The casting AI is actually pretty good. I trust it enough to be comfortable using auto against high-health bosses: its choices aren't always optimal, but it knows to reapply buffs/debuffs and blast the enemy with your highest damage option. The drawback is that it doesn't really care for your mana and will burn through it faster than I'd like.
