Lmao no. It's to train your cognitive ability to measure proportions mentally by sight.

"Drawing what you see" is not about drawing the complete picture, but rather learning how and where to place lines in relative distance, shapes, forms etc. It's the small steps taken into building the entire piece.

Imagine having an untrained mind or sight and imagine having a limited cognitive ability to gauge distance and proportions. Imagine that mind having 4x4 or 2x2 grid.

As you get better with observational drawing, a trained cognitive ability, your imaginary grid starts getting bigger and bigger, 8x8, 16x16 etc and you "see" or "feel" more coordinates within that grid.

Your line placement gets more and more accurate, relative distance gets closer to absolute distance.

It's nothing to do with memorization or imagination or retaining shapes sizes etc of any objects. it's not "learning how to draw shoes" and memorizing and retaining "the shape of that shoe" in your brain. If anything it's teaching you the opposite of this, to break the mold, to discourage and make you unlearn symbol drawing.

Same reason why pros and art masters would actually squint their eyes when drawing, or leaving the piece for a day and coming back later. To escape from that symbol drawing state. You get a fresh mental/sight state, and a more accurate feel/view, free from brain distortion. Sometimes you get ahead too much with your imagination you started adding things that isn't there or necessary.

It's to train your cognitive ability to place more and more accurate lines, nonchalantly and with confidence. Drawing what you see also trains your hands to get loose.
