You guys are both so off the mark it's laughable.

The internet used to be much smaller, and made up of MOSTLY people who diverged from the norms of meatspace. There was this shared understanding that everyone here was a weirdo. So people would go "haha that's weird" but still find you quirky if you were kinda off, as most artists are, or go "that's weird, get the fuck away from me please" if you were too freaky AND maladjusted.

After a point things changed, more normie-style social interaction cropped up, and you started seeing groups of people trying to shame others for lesser and lesser infractions.
SOME artists just went "fuck you" and kept doing what they were doing - a lot of these happened to be coom artists, and they are doing well for themselves.
SOME artists instead aligned themselves with the shaming mobs, particularly if they were low on the "weird" end, and then had to watch as every little thing they did started to get scrutinized. They either stepped on a landmine and got socially immolated, or got socially burnt out and quietly receded into not sharing as much. Hell plenty of people get shat on, or even their shit deleted (in "community" spaces) when their work is TOO GOOD compared to those around them or for trying to actually help others improve. The crabbing is SEVERE in many locations, /ic/ isn't even the tip of the crab-berg.

Add on that a lot of older artists simply do not have time for it - plenty had mental or phyiscal illness catch up to them, started families, experienced financial hardship, advanced in their careers to the point that the stress of posting became too much on top of everything else, or a potential risk.

So what does that leave us with? A revolving door of under-30 artists who attach themselves to internet fandoms and social cliques, which hamper their development beyond the shallow.
