Wrong. Loomis was never abandonware. The copyright for Loomis's books never expired. Whoever owned the rights (I believe it was a family member) simply didn't care enough to have them printed. What you spring chickens fail to realize is that representational art fell out of favor around the latter half of the 20th century. You could get a degree in art from a prestigious university in the US or Europe and not encounter a single teacher who knew how to draw or paint properly. Representational art was purged from the galleries and not deemed worthy of art criticism in the pages of major newspapers.

I can tell you from first-hand experience that first editions of Loomis were passed around among illustrators and the small number of artists keeping alive a version of the atelier system in the US. The point being, Loomis was always highly respected and sought after by people who wanted or needed to draw and paint images grounded in the fundamentals of western art. There is literally nothing "outdated" about Loomis except, perhaps, the clothing and hairstyles of his models. Who cares? Proportion, construction, form, anatomy, perspective, composition — these are as relevant as ever.
