To put it simply, shape language is an important step in character creation to decide not only its iconicity or how easily the character is recognized just by its shape, but it also provides a lot of visual information about the personality. That's why many character designs tend to keep their design in one main and one secondary figure and exaggerate it.

That's why in the picrel I exaggerated the hips and the length of the hips to have a main shape and only complement it with rectangles.

It's okay to follow the correct proportions as long as you use them as a guide and not as inviolable rules.
