This reminds me of when I went to a comic convention and there were a bunch (like 50 or so) of kids dressed up as the Trolls from homestuck. It's essentially the same thing, you're just glorifying one over the other, because it's a franchise you like.

While it's definitely a statement on the state of the corporate side of the media industry (particularly for English speaking countries), I'd still say that indie stuff shows that the western creatives are perfectly fine.
