There is a massive difference between spanking your kid when he's five for wetting the bed or getting into a nothingburger fight with his brother over a toy - which is abuse and shouldn't be countenanced or tolerated - and giving him a slap on the back of the head a decade or so later when he has a fit of adolescent angst and calls his mother a cunt during an argument. I also wouldn't count, for lack of a better word, "physical corrections" (flick on the ear, light pinching, a single swat on the ass, etc.) as either abusive or "hitting", in a vacuum. Some people can turn those into a form of torture, though, so I'm certainly not trying to excuse those cases.

I only got hit by my parents a handful of times in my life and all of them but one (I was allegedly lightly spanked once after consistently and dramatically acting up for multiple days when I was 6 or thereabouts but have no memory of it whatsoever) were the latter case and richly deserved. I'm not claiming that it had some notable on my life one way or another but in the hindsight of adulthood I can look back and say "I really was a shithead to my parents, wasn't I?".
