An important factor in charges getting dropped (for some of them, some of them did go to prison) was a group breaking into an empty FBI office during a Muhammad Ali fight and pilfering documents about illegal methods to go after the anti-war movement, leftists, etc. and CIA domestic spying (which was illegal) which they then sent to the newspapers. Caused a big scandal and led to the Church Committee hearings (see Frank Church here with one of the CIA's poison dart guns).

It's fun to read New Left underground publications about this as well and the impression is that the far right was like a Gladio operation (well, not surprising) where a right-wing youth group would try to crash / egg an anti-war meeting but the people apparently calling the shots are a twin set of older guys in their 40s/50s standing in the back wearing trenchcoats (really). And there was some shady stuff. Like leftists having bombs planted under their cars or having their houses raked with gunfire in drive-bys. You hear stories if you meet old leftists who were part of these groups back then.

What I read is there was a factional dispute between the PL and the Action Faction (which became the W.U.). The PL were Maoist types.
