Absolutely. It's hard enough to compromise internally sometimes, I'm not sure doing it across multiple groups is even really possible.

Obviously I can't speak for everyone or even say how common it is but we are constantly looking for new members. We use gate keeping not as a way to be an elitist circle jerk but just to make sure only people that are really interested get in and make sure we don't get flooded so fast that we can't integrate people into our own niche culture we've developed. I've seen too many communities fall apart because they got too huge an influx of new members in too short a time, I mean just look at this place. But again we are still constantly looking for new people because if you don't get in new people the community will also die just in a different way.
