There's no rational basis for where to fix and define a point, it was arbitrarily chosen by different standards bodies. But yes, 72 DPI made it in only because of Postscript and then CSS adopting it. There is no harm with OS scaling and sticking to the 72/96 DPI is nonsense. You will discover that while reading the latin alphabet is fine at that size, if you try and read other alphabets and scripts, 96 DPI is shit for telling the difference between 衰 and 衷, for instance. This is why people threw away that concept and started using PPI and using what the human eye can resolve as a measure of what or how much pixels you can cram which is how we got the PPI/Retina phone wars.
