What these guys also refuse to realize is that if the work is anything semi-specialized or the materials slightly out of the ordinary there's a very good chance that everyone in town who he might be contacting know and talk to each other and will give a heads up when they detect his type...not just contractors but *anyone* he might be pumping for info like suppliers to get material cost data to use against the bidders.

That means every contractor who calls up the supplier and asks about stuff that is obviously for that guy's job is going to learn that he's one of *those*.
Even if the guy makes no direct contact trying to get pricing info, when the same items and materials lists all show up from every contractor in that niche working up bids the supplier's loyalty is to HIS customer and they won't hesitate to let everyone know that this asshole is getting bids from literally everybody to pit them against each other.

Contractors compete for work but they also look out for the industry and aren't enemies...hell, half the time they're related to each other.
