This implies that problematic portrayal is necessary to the genre which is kind of fucked up. That's not the case, and it's pretty easy to sidestep problematic issues in several ways.

Yeah, when foreigners dig up artifacts and take them home, they are thieves. You can still have an adventuring archeologist who goes on adventures and returns artifacts to their rightful cultural owners in the end. The fact that the object of the adventure isn't taken home at the end to sit on the shelf of a foreign museum doesn't affect the story in the slightest.
