It's pretty straight forward if you go with the angle of Beast and Gaston having traits that are commonly associated with men, them looking for female counterparts of them.

>Belle
Mamma's boy. A geek with natural good looks from his father's side. Doesn't care about love and just wants to live a quiet life with his books. Too much of a nice guy to reject female Gaston, who's too much of a narcissist to grasp that someone wouldn't be interested in her.
>Beast
Needy, timid lady with a low self-stem. Used to be a gorgeous but cold hearted princess until she was cursed and turned into a Medusa-looking monster. She stays in the darkness, refusing to let others see her face. Initially traps male Belle in her castle because she's too self centered.
>Gaston
Manipulative bitch who's only interested in male Belle because he's the only guy in the village who isn't orbiting her. Makes men humiliate themselves for her own amusement. Not a fighter but instead makes others do the dirty work for her. The Gaston song is now about how beautiful, smart and ladylike she is.

So the story is now about a handsome nerd being trapped in a castle with an ugly snake monster, eventually helping her become more confident because there's more to beauty in women than just looks.
