Your lack of consistent terminology makes your post confusing. Are we talking sliced bread, or something like a roll that is cut in half? Either way I don't really see how "front" and "back" apply to bread.
My attempt to answer what I think you're asking is as follows: for sandwich bread, I butter the side that faces the sandwich fillings. To butter the other side would give you literal butterfingers. For something like a roll or baguette that is cut in half, I butter the cut side, for the same reason as above, plus the fact that it's easier to get a good spread on the cut side.
