He is extremely popular among what is *now* the GOP base. He was extremely divisive among what used to be the GOP base, to the point where much of that base is now part of the Democrat base.
He is also extremely popular among what used to be the Democrat base, that is now part of the new GOP base.

Don't get confused by "Republican" and "Democrat", those are just names, the actual people making up those parties are not fixed in place but switch around over time. Large chunks of the Democrat base switched to the Republican party, and large chunks of the Republican base switched to the Democrat party. Only the names continued, after the realignment the parties themselves were very different than they had been. Trump didn't "convince" the GOP of anything, he dynamited both parties and created a new party out of the fragments of both and re-used the "Republican" name for the brand recognition (having learned that lesson during his short 3rd party run in 2000).

Nope, lots of former republicans switched to the democrat party. But lots of former democrats also switched to the trump party. There has been a really historic political party realignment in the last decade, I really don't know how you managed to miss it.
