Dumber myth than trustworthy guard dogs. This has never been the case. It has been believed, but a lot of people also believe their grandparents reincarnated as cows and dogs can smell evil people.

It is actually in the interest of cats to never kill enough pests and do something to attract more - like leaving bits and whole corpses uneaten. Extermination is an apex predator thing because they have the size to guard surplus kills and the stamina to migrate or expand. Cats are also prey and have to hide from larger animals or get eaten themselves. They dont pose a threat to anything but rare and slow breeding animals like tropical birds.

A lot of the myth comes from seeing cats with kills, but never realizing that the cat is withdrawing from a neverending supply, and thinking the rodents are gone when they’re just moving between food sources faster and spending less time in the open. When cats kill daily the infestation is massive. Especially if they’re killing rats, because cats only kill juvenile and weakened rats, almost never healthy adults.

Wild rodents do not even flee from cat urine. Only naive lab rats do. Cats have never, ever acted to exterminate or tamp down rodent populations. Their presence in public is a nuisance. They are purely hobby pets, like most dogs.
