this isn't his fault and you should be able to do your job on your own not rely on him, he doesn't owe you anything especially not owing you helping you do your job.

why would he have to give you heads up? if your just "work friends" then you aren't friends, and him taking an interview is plenty of heads up, if you genuinely think you are friends then whats the big deal if he works somewhere else.
He told you anyway that hes thinking of leaving, it shouldn't matter to you (beyond so far social reasons) if he works there or not, but coupled with the first point it sounds like you are relying on him
