The anime is based on something else, this something being a video game which doesnt matter in the slightest. If you're adapting something, do it faithfully or fuck off, simple as that. Don't try to rewrite anything which will just (rightfully) piss off the fans in one way or another. Also this. The way they did it gives everything a lot to think about, while if you gave everyone a different dude it would just turn into more generic romcom slop. It's all one huge "what if?" story, and I very much appreciate it because of that, makes it a unique watch while at it too.
