take GI Joe, in each episode there is a villian doing villianous things MWAHAHAHA, then comes some assortment of GI Joe members, there is a ""fight"" in which some abilities are shown and then ZOMG the villian escapes again, but het team we stopped them right? RIGHT Hi' five!

Main characters intro, some relevant characters intro, some development and then weeks worth of filler, like the DBZ namek fight vs freezer, the captain tsubasa's football so deformed it looks like a bean taking DAYS to cross the fucking fields. In short mastering time dilation to such extent they would make Einstein wet himself like a high school teenager looking at their crush

There is a slow but steady character development and some progress in the plot. we show either a new character intro, some past event relevant to a character to understand them better, some light side tracked adventure and when things are explained enough then we advance the plot, giving main characters some closing in order to reach the plot climax.
So yeah, not all episodic series are done in the same way.
