I was mentioning it as a broad idea. I'll give you a more specific but still general example:
>new content arrives
>harder than average
>maybe new mechanics
>devs make a character (singular) tailored to the new content
>everyone who can afford spends accumulated resources and money to get them
>it's a small deviation from the usual formula at the time and nobody bats an eye
>cycle repeats with new extra things added here and there to your progress that you have to sink your time or money into
>these small extra additions by themselves don't seem to do much but over time as more of them are added they affect the powercreep
>devs at some point make new content nearly impossible without very specific characters (plural now) AND setups affected by the small additions
>everything is usually solved with money
>new players join with all kinds of headstarts only to hit a major wall which incentivises spending money
>f2p players' resources accumulated over the years start to slowly be depleted instead of going up
>or their current progress becomes outdated way quicker than before
>f2p players feel like they can't keep up with this new formula compared to the old one when they started playing

I'm not sure at what stage the game is with this type of business model or if they follow a different path than others.
