It works the opposite of that in reality though, of the structure compromises then it acts as a cushion for slowing down the impact for the pilot, like landing on an air mattress from a high fall. In fact, I would be more concerned if the structure didn't compromise, that's the whole reason why hard body cars in the 70s were deathtraps, the car isn't "armor" for the driver and if there's no slowing of the impact for the occupants then they hit their steering wheel and dashboard at full speed and break bones and organs and shit.

The real answer is a combination of drama, cool mecha physics and Newtype shenanigans.
