The game would have desperately needed more gun tiers as whole. You’re fully right about the assault rifle, and if it was dubbed as
>power armor assault rifle
or
>light machine gun
it would still be butt-ugly, but not maddeningly dumb.

Beyond that, it also felt shit that there’s just one proper sniper rifle that you can mod to different calibers. Modding doesn’t change the gun looks or feel enough, and as a result, FO4’s .50 cal feels like pissy shit when compared to the baller anti-materiel rifle in New Vegas. Separating sniper rifle into two different weapons would have made it so much better, and I’m sure that there are many more examples I could present if I had fresher memories of the game.
