You have no idea how much the game relies on the 'nose-to-the-ground' camera. Driving tanks is a prime example: driver cannot see beyond 20m, gunner cannot see beyond 40m(typical tank cannon range), commander can see up to 120m(bino range), but has to communicate with gunner and driver where to go and what to shoot. This artificial handicap to situational awareness only exists because devs think that "teamwork" = "fun" and "having three dudes do one man's job = "teamwork". Cranking FOV up to reasonable level eliminates the need for commander entirely since now you can actually see what's around you. Same shit is a big part of artillery spotting and infantry combat, but there it's overshadowed by infantry visibility rules, LOS blocking and vertical aiming(which is not as trivial as you might think).
It also makes high ground extremely valuable: sitting on top of a hill allows you to see farther than you should be able to, while sitting at the bottom of that hill limits your already poor vision to almost nothing. This sounds like good design: high ground should be valuable for this exact reason, and it is. However, devs wouldn't be devs if they didn't fuck this up too and make Conclave.
The other thing they use it for is aggressive culling. Their graphics engine is shit, their models are extremely detailed and textures are high-res; this makes for a pretty picture, but if you zoom out even a little fps dips down big time.
