If you never subscribed and never used dubloons, just make a new pirate. Your old one probably is toast anyway. They delete inactive pirates who never subscribed/don't have doubloons.

>Non-sub accounts
Shack only for house, can't own shops, can't own or captain ships, clothes are basic like rags and bandanas, no shoes, limited weapons (none of the good ones, IMHO), only pet is a rat, rotating puzzle selection in tavern/shops, low rank in crews (not that it does anything). You can still do any puzzle on a ship outside of navigation or gunning, go on expeditions, earn POE (game currency), work in shops (sometimes), participate in events, and gain puzzle skill ranks.

There's two ways to subscribe: pure subscription and Doubloon. Both handle restrictions differently and it's up to you which one sounds the most fair.

>Subscription
Pay a flat fee to unlock all the things. If the subscription ends, you go back to restricted. The restrictions feel heavier as it's all or nothing. That said, it's about $6.25 a month if you pay yearly, which can be cheaper than buying a lot of doubloons every month. This is your best bet if you want to do all the puzzles, captain a ship/run a shop, have a large nice house, hoard weapons, and/or look fancy. It's also nice if you don't want to deal with a secondary currency.

>Doubloons
Everything is a micro transaction. Buy non-rags and a sword? Pay doubloons plus POE for the shopkeeper. Clothes and weapons degrade over time. You will need to rebuy them. Buy a ship? More doubloons plus pay doubloons for navigation badge and you still pay the shipwright in POE, Unlock puzzles permanently? More doubloons. You get the picture. Sometimes you can buy doubloons off other players for POE which helps All spent doubloons are burned: players don't get them! Anyway, if you never want to bother with being a captain/shop owner, only play specific puzzles, or just want nice clothes and don't care about houses, then this may work for you.
