Yeah I've seen most of their weird endemic birds in the wild like the overly smart kea parrots and even kiwis even though those were a bitch to see because they've turned nocturnal since humans arrived. Also a ton skinks and geckos, as well as overly large insects. The wildlife here is 100% safe though unless you go and poke a sea lion with a stick
Rich marine wildlife as well I've spotted whales and dolphins

I'd def love to check out New Caledonia as well, wouldn't be too complicated since I'm French I could work and live there indefinitely. It would probably be a different vibe, NC has been much more ravaged by mining and predators than NZ so far
But I'm thinking I might do Chile next, seems like NZ on steroids in many ways

ACKSHUALLY there are plenty conifers in that pic, it's a mixed southern beech (Nothofagus) /podocarp forest, and podocarp such as totara, rimu, kahikatea etc are evergreen coniferous
But that's for pedantry's sake, I know very well what you meant kek
