This kind of breaks my heart, but I think it's also general stupidity caused by modern social mores. I had asked out a girl at work before who flatly turned me down and then a week later I found out she was bawling to her girlfriend about it because she realized it probably would've been good but she did it out of reflex and blew her chance. Even when something worthwhile comes our way we clam up out of fear for change or something not being perfect and shoot ourselves in the foot--I can't even blame her since I've done the same thing before.

The truth is that it's far easier to develop those bonds with another person when you're young, when hormones cloud your "good" judgement, and when you just go for things since your worry on how it's going to turn out isn't nearly as strong as your desire to find someone. It's when you hit your late 20s or your early 30s and you don't have that pull anymore that you start second guessing your every move, waiting for perfection, telling yourself you have all the time in the world and you start letting good things pass you by more and more because in your pursuit for seriousness you give up working with anything that's less than a sure shot. I don't know what the "fix" for that is, but I know if I had to do it all over again I would've tried everything in my power to get married in my early 20s and just hope for the best.
