There's a Sahih Hadith that literally condones washing from a well filled with blood and garbage.
>Abu Sa‘īd al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was asked: "Can we perform ablution from the well of Budā‘ah, which is a well into which menstrual pads, dead dogs and stinky things are thrown?" He replied: "Water is pure and nothing makes it impure."
On the other hand, any Indians simply integrate folk beliefs and practices that aren't necessarily Hindu into their belief system - the reason for cremation in the first place is to prevent infection of water sources in dense living arrangements, but there are many poor people in UP who couldn't afford enough material for a full cremation during the depths of COVID so they just burned what they could and sent the rest down the river. Being poor and not being able to follow your religion doesn't define that religion's tenets.
