I mean, I feel like a lot of this comes from not tempering your expectations. For instance, there's probably a story to be written in a case of "I'm going to make sure things go the way they're supposed to go."
For instance, it would be like if you end up in Star Wars, and you're the guy who just works to make sure the story plays out the same. The highlight would be participating in the final battle, shooting Stormtroopers alongside Han Solo, and thinking "Wow, this is the greatest moment of my life." And in the end, you hook up with some side-character and get to stand alongside the Rebels at the end when the Ewoks celebrate. With the conclusion being Luke going "Hey, I need to set up a New Jedi Order, are you in?"
But pretty much no story seems to do that. It's always "I want to be the big hero now". They don't wanna help Luke on his journey, they want to replace him. Which feels kind of masturbatory, really.
