It did. The original story was very successful. 2 years later, it got a movie. Sometime later, it got another movie starring Sonny Chiba ~~Yes! THAT "Sonny Chiba!"~~. Later again, another manga, just as raunchy as the first. Then, an OVA (6 episodes). Then the popular "Akumetsu" team was asked to make ANOTHER adaptation for 12 volumes that ran for years.

Does that mean Western audiences in 2023? No. Heck, English versions didn't even appear outside of "scanlation projects" until the late 90s, and unless you were a b-movie Sonny Chiba fan, you never saw "Enraged Lycanthrope." The Akumetsu gore of 2007 was the first time you heard about it. But Japan had it. They had a number of versions of it, really. Some pretty popular.

As defining as "gore" and "sex" is about Wolf Guy, despite its name, the characteristic trait of its MC is practically incidental. It's just a narrative gimmick to allow supernatural "you can't kill me and I'm a God" trait to its MC and reason to allow god-like horror to be depicted to everyone around him.
